Google Maps launches Immersive View in five cities

Google Maps will launch ‘glanceable directions’ shortly. Google is launching updates to Maps, which are part of its plans to make the app more engaging and easy for its users, Google announced at its conference today in Paris.

Google Maps launches Immersive

The most notable thing is that the company has announced that Immersive View is rolling out this morning in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. Google announced that immersive View, first revealed during I/O at the end of May 2022, was created to assist you in planning and better understanding the layout of a city before your go there. The company plans to launch Immersive View in cities such as Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice in the next few months.

The feature blends billions of Street Views and aerial images to create a digital map of the entire world. It also adds details to this digital representation, like information about weather conditions and traffic, as well as how crowded an area could be. For example, let’s say you’re planning on visiting the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and would like to know more about the museum before going. It is possible to use Immersive View to hover over the museum to understand better how it appears and where the entrances are. It also lets you see what the surrounding area seems like at various times of day and what the weather forecast will be similar to. Immersive View will provide nearby eateries and let you look inside them to see if they might be a good fit for you.

To create these true-to-life scenes

“To create these true-to-life scenes, we use neural radiance fields (NeRF), an advanced AI technique, transforms ordinary pictures into 3D representations,” Google explained in an article on its blog. “With NeRF, we can precisely recreate the entire context of a location, such as its lighting, appearance of the material and the things behind it. This allows you to determine whether a bar’s dark lighting will be the perfect atmosphere to have a romantic night out or if the views from the cafe are an ideal place to have lunch with your loved ones.”

It also revealed that a new feature known as “glance-able directions” is rolling out across the globe for Android and iOS in the next few months. This feature lets you track your travels directly from your map overview or lock screen. Users will be able to view the most recent ETAs as well as the best place to take the next stop. If you decide to go on an alternative route, the app will modify your way promptly. Google says that in the past, it was only accessible when you unlocked your phone, opened the app, and used the extensive navigation mode. It is possible to access the directions at a glance anytime you’re using the app, regardless of whether you’re biking, walking or taking public transport.

Google has also announced that it will be growing Search with Live View to more locations across Europe shortly, such as Barcelona, Madrid and Dublin. This Search with Live View feature allows you to use your camera to locate important places such as restaurants, ATMs, and stores, even when you’re out and about. When you’re in an unfamiliar area and trying to locate the closest ATM, you can raise your camera and use the search feature to view ATMs instantly within the vicinity. Google recently introduced Search with Live View in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo.

Conclusion

Then, Google is adding new features to EVs with Google Maps integrated. Users will soon be able to locate stations with 150 kilowatts or more chargers. Maps will also indicate where supermarkets have to charge stations on their premises. Additionally, Maps will start suggesting the most suitable location depending on essential factors such as the current traffic conditions and the charge level of the expected amount of energy for any journey that needs an outlet for charging. Google claims that all the newly added EV features will roll out over the following months.
